Description
Every building tells a story and this one certainly has a rich history! Hut 34 is one of five beautifully modernised and renovated Nissen huts that are part of the former Cultybraggan Prisoner of War Camp, just a mile outside the picturesque village of Comrie. Dive into the history of this unique and memorable place.
Nissen huts were commonly used in PoW camps across Britain during World War II. While they were only intended to be temporary, Cultybraggan Camp lived on after the war as a MOD training centre for more than 70 years. It’s now the last remaining Prisoner of War Camp in Scotland and has been named by Historic Scotland as a Unique Heritage Asset of International Value.
Thanks to the vision of the Comrie Development Trust, which now owns the camp, five Nissen huts have been transformed into spacious, sustainable and modern self-catering accommodation. They’re ideal whether you’re a keen history buff or simply want a truly unique stay in the Perthshire countryside.
While the huts retain their iconic external design, they’ve all been given a major facelift with a bright red roof, crisp white exterior front wall, and black door and window trim, providing an Insta-worthy contrast to the vivid greens of the surrounding Aberuchill Hills.
Inside, Hut 34 has been completely transformed with a spacious open plan living room, fully-equipped kitchen and dining space, full of natural light. Blond wooden floors, cream interior walls, pale furniture tones and the white cabinetry of the kitchen add to the sense of space and calm. There’s comfortable seating including a sofa bed and television for when it's time to relax, plus a dining table with seating for 4.
The separate bedroom contains a king size bed, and there’s also a modern separate bathroom with a shower.
KEY FEATURES
Fully modernised, renovated huts.
1 bedroom - 1 x King & 1 x Double Sofa Bed
1 modern main shower room.
Open plan kitchen and lounge area
Dining table that seats 4
Fully equipped Kitchen
Situated within the former prison of war camp.
LOCATION
Cultybraggan Camp is situated two miles outside the picturesque village of Comrie, in the heart of Perthshire. The Camp, which belongs to the Comrie Development Trust, is home to local businesses and community groups. You can learn about the history of the camp at the informative PoW exhibition, which includes a recreation of prisoner accommodation.
Take a visit to Comrie village where you’ll find local shops and places to eat, with more options a little further along in the larger town of Crieff.
Comrie is a great base for exploring all the delights of Perthshire. Families will love a trip to Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre, set in the Perthshire hills, home to a variety of exotic and more familiar wildlife. Golfers are spoilt for choice with lots of quality local courses, or the famous Gleneagles is just half an hour’s drive away. It’s a walker’s paradise with options at all levels, from the Glenlendock Circular Walk that starts in Comrie, the popular and wheelchair-friendly Lady Mary’s Walk at Crieff, to the mighty Munros of Ben Vorlich, Stuc a Chorin and Ben Chonzie.
Just a quick heads-up: there's a cattle grid at the entrance of the camp. Since we've got a bunch of small business outlets here, you might spot some vehicles coming and going in the early mornings and evenings.
Welcome to Cultybraggan Camp, enjoy this unique stay!

Cleaning could be better -
the combi microwave oven still had food in it from previous guests and the included stand was greasy and needed a good scrub. The pans were greasy and hadn't been cleaned properly from previous guests. The drainer was grim.... I appreciate this is often overlooked, but each section had a dirty scum and visibly in need of a clean. Broken and very dirty ice tray in the freezer.. minor thing, but just needs to be replaced. Furnishing - Sofa bed has seen better days, mattress is thin, perhaps a topper would make for a more comfortable for those using it? Kitchen - Missing items, spoons, cups, glasses etc... It happens over time but based on previous visits, its clear that there are no regular checks or re stocks happening to ensure that all items are available and in a full set. On a previous visit to this same hut (34) we reported a hair dye stain in the bathroom on arrival... which is still there (2 or 3 years later) Overall the hut is still lovely, but we are now noticing that the details are being overlooked and its starting to show wear and tear which is a real shame because its just feeling a bit unloved. Would it stop us returning, absolutely not but it would be lovley if the little details were thought of, especially given that the cost for these huts has risen significantly in the last few years. |

Thank you very much for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. I am truly sorry that the cleanliness and maintenance fell short on this stay. That is not the standard we aim for, especially as you have stayed before and know how things should be. You are absolutely right to expect better.
We have already flagged the kitchen points with our housekeeping team so that the combi-microwave, pans, drainer and freezer trays are checked and cleaned to a higher standard, and we will be replacing any items that are past their best. We are also reviewing our inventory checks to make sure missing items such as spoons and glasses are picked up and restocked promptly between visits. The sofa bed and the bathroom stain are being assessed as part of this review, and if a topper improves guest comfort, we will add one. I really appreciate you mentioning that you still love the hut and would return. Feedback like yours helps us keep the standard where it should be, and I want you to feel the improvements on your next stay. We value your loyalty, and we will make sure the hut feels just as cared for as it should! |

We liked staying here : and in particular the fact there was an onsite cafe. This saved us shopping for food during our stay.

The only downside was that the hut was quite cold when we arrived. Granted there was an electric heater but we were unable to switch on the central heating.
Also the pillows had seen better days. They were flat and very much needed replacing.
